Get Your Body Ready to Go

Triathletes are constantly moving, practicing, and training. It slows you down when you're working so hard on an empty stomach, or even worse, one full of all the wrong foods. Have a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. It's a whole grain with soluble fiber, which means it soaks up unwanted fat and cholesterol in your blood, making sure you're not carrying around any extra baggage throughout your workouts. It also contains the GOOD carbohydrates, meaning your energy is increased, more efficient, and longer lasting. It slows the absorption of glucose, so you won't feel too hungry as you work hard, either. Add some milk, fruit, or nuts to give it some more taste, and enjoy your whole day!

Change up Your Route

You know that there is a set course for race day. You know you can probably practice it until you are swimming, biking, and running it in your sleep. However, it is much more difficult to practice the unfamiliarity that race day brings-the crowd, the weather, the other racers, even your health. So challenge yourself. Map out a route that you have never done before-whether it's one leg of the race or all three, and go for it. See how you do on a course that your body has not adapted to and if your time is not as quick as a similarly distanced familiar route, take note. Continue looking for new courses and tracking your time, and eventually your body will stop responding irregularly to them. The more route-changing you can do (along with regular training), the more ready you will be no matter what comes your way on the big day!

Shave Seconds off Your Run with Sand

Check out where there are some local sand dunes by you (or a hilly beach), grab a water bottle, and trek out there. Map out a run for yourself (by distance, not by time) and start hitting the dunes. Your time will be slower, but because sand is a very unstable surface, practicing will make your road run seem like a cake walk and the hills won't knock you off of your feet. Running on a sandy incline is also better on your joints, so shin splints become less likely. Try and make it a weekly routine and watch your running time improve!
